Atman means 'eternal self'. The Atman refers to the real self beyond ego or false self. It is often referred to as 'spirit' or 'soul' and indicates our true self or essence which underlies our existence.

"The Atman (true-self) does not love, it is love itself. It does not exist, it is existence itself. It does not know, it is knowledge itself. The Atman does not feel happy, it is bliss itself. Love, existence, knowledge, bliss are not qualities of Atman, but its real essence." Patanjali- Yoga Sutras 4th Century B.C.
